Rise Above the Hubbub

with a sparky personality & bigger story your customers connect with

Life has got so busy that we tend to blank out most marketing messages we see. But as tired as we are of being sold to, we’re still open to brands we believe in.

My skill is telling your bigger story and capturing your real personality in words. Instantly you feel different to your competition; fresh and authentic. There’s less need to sell because your customers identify with you and they want to act on that.

My story

I’ve always been a writer. I taught myself to hold a pen (that’s why I do it weirdly) and by the age of 7 I was sent to get books from another school building because I’d read every single one in mine.

My professional writing career spans a decade and has included brand personality and messaging work for a huge variety of clients. I lead dynamic workshops around copywriting, tone of voice and brand storytelling.

I love creating magical childhood memories for my children and live near mythical Stonehenge. Aside from books, my weaknesses are vampire films, dark chocolate and always being as cosy as possible.

BBC Bitesize

Slightly wacky science teacher BBC Bitesize image

Science is rich with fascinating stories. My all-knowing but accessible, quirky character gave life to the BBC’s Key Stage Three Science revision modules and used stories to communicate key learnings. These innovative animations are some of the most popular on the Bitesize site. A collaboration with Preloaded

Homeserve

A helping hand for Homeserve Homeserve image

To launch Homeserve’s nationwide home repairs service, I worked directly with the web team to create the right tone of voice, brand language and all the content from scratch. I had a short time frame but delivered over 120 pages of on-brand copy in time and within budget.

DCMS

Losing the Government speak Department for Culture, Media and Sport branding

here can be few worse crimes against language than ‘bureaucrat speak’. I helped DCMS communicate more clearly, cut out the jargon and provide a friendlier feel on over 100 pages of their website. This achieved great results in user testing.

MTV Flux

The Fluxicon Lexicon MTV Flux branding

It was a joy to create the unique ‘voice of Flux’ and brand language guide for MTV‘s new channel and social media site. I also wrote teaser copy to start conversations and drive TV viewers to the website — giving continuity between the two.

Masa International

A treasure trove of online assets Spanish beach

Everybody at Masa has a passion for Spain and the expat lifestyle. Over dozens of area guides and hundreds of pages of web copy, I told this story over and over again, illustrating it with lyrical pieces about Spain and expat stories — establishing them as an authority and building their brand.

Channel 4 – 4oD

Feeding the 4 addiction 4 On Demand logo

4oD (4 on Demand) was the first online TV ‘catch-up’ service in the UK. My short, clear and to-the-point web copy enticed viewers to download the software and talked them clearly through the installation process. I went on to write copy for equally pioneering Channel 4 projects Fuse and Picture This.
